Art: William Sidney Mount-Long Island Artist William Sidney Mount has been labeled an “absolutely American” genre painter by critics. Mount grounded his work in subtle variations of country folk, rural activities, social arrangements and the body politic of 19th century America. He created paintings of the yankee yeoman, the African -American citizen, the rural farm boy and the gambling sovereigns. He frequently took issue with the discrepancies in the democracy of the 1800’s, putting politics into the public arena with deceptively innocent pictorial language, “stirring people up” with his revealing visual criticism. Ms. Caruso’s slideshow/lecture will spotlight this fascinating artist.

In the Showcase Local resident Don Flynn shares the fabulous model planes he has made. These WWI models were hand-carved out of ordinary pine, using only the tools Don had in his garage. Each part was carved separately, even the propellers and wheels. No balsa wood was used in the construction of these beautiful models. We are grateful to Don for sharing his work with us. Be sure to stop by to view this wonderful sample of Don’s talents. |
Book Discussion Destinies can change in an instant. Chance happenings-a meeting on a park bench, a missed train-set our lives in one direction rather than another. Consequences is the story of three generations of women beginning in the 1930’s with Lorna, then focusing on Lolly in the post-war years, and finally rounding off the tale with up-to -date Ruth. The women are buffeted by events but do not break. Their lives are shaped by the times in which they live. Author Penelope Lively segues easily from viewpoint to viewpoint, decade to decade. Her eloquent kaleidoscopic treatment of time and space elevates this novel into something quite beautiful. Linda Judenberg will moderate. Refreshments, compliments of The Friends, will be served. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.
