Book Discussion-The Mark of the Angel The Mark of the Angel, by Nancy Huston, is a story of romance and cynicism, evil and injustice, accident and fate as well as human history. It was written in French and then translated into English by Huston herself. The story opens in Paris in 1957 when Raphael Lepage, a famous flutist, advertises for a housekeeper. Saffie, a German immigrant of unknown background, applies for the position and soon finds herself married to Raphael. She becomes involved with a flute repairer and the reader discovers aspects of the war in Europe as well as the Algerian conflict after that war. Huston was born in Calgary and moved to Boston when she was 15. She began her education at Sarah Lawrence, went to Paris in her junior year and never returned to the U.S. The book has garnered many awards and was selected by U.S. independent booksellers as one of the best books of 1999.
