Film Festival- Management

A bottle of wine, compliments of the management of a roadside motel owned by Mike’s (Steve Zahn) parents in Arizona, jump-starts the cross country journey and unique courtship between two different kinds of people who are both ultimately looking for the same thing: happiness.

Mike sees something special in the buttoned-down Sue (Jennifer Aniston) that inspires him to take a chance and hit the road to go after her. Once he reaches Maryland, in the chase, he discovers that Sue has no place for an aimless dreamer in her carefully ordered life. What ensues is a twisted, bumpy journey to discover where their place in the world might be.

Also starring Woody Harrelson as Jango, her punk-turned-yogurt mogul boyfriend.

Book Discussion-The Story of a Marriage

A microcosm of changing times during life in the 50’s, as seen through the life and marriage of Pearlie Cook.

In the summer of ' 53, the Rosenbergs were executed, a cease-fire was reached in Korea and the first stirrings of desegregation were taking place in public schools in the south. Pearlie has devoted herself to maintaining a protective bubble around her husband, Holland. The novel takes as its main subject the unbridgeable, quite possibly incomprehensible distances that separate human beings: “Our husbands, our wives...we think we know them. But what we love turns out to be a poor translation we ourselves have made, from a language we barely know.”

This slim little gem of a book is thought-provoking, complex and exquisitely written– its brevity belies its emotional and psychological depth. Linda Judenberg will moderate. Refreshments, compliments of The Friends, will be served. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.

Date: Friday, Oct. 16th
Time: 1:30pm
