Returning to our “stage” by popular request, Naomi Zeitlin will delight you with her songs and tidbits of information about this glorious period in Hollywood history. By the 1940’s,Hollywood musicals had become a major source of popular music, showcasing such great talents as Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly and Alice Faye, as well as popularizing songs including “Stormy Weather,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I’ve Heard That Song Before,” “You’ll Never Know,” and of course, “The Trolley Song.” Naomi will explore the amazingly rich variety of movie musicals and songs from the 40’s, when the country was preparing for, in the midst of, and recovering from World War II. Through discussion and song, she’ll analyze how the times influenced these movies and how these movies influenced their time. Naomi will perform many of these great songs, some of which you’ll be eager to dance to, some may make you laugh or cry, some will make you think, and some will just make you feel. Join us for a most enjoyable evening-you’ll be glad you did! Date: Wednesday, September 23rd

Book Discussion: The Secret River The Secret River, by Kate Grenville, is a historical novel about Australia and its early British settlers. William Thornhill, a poor boatman on the River Thames, is driven to crime to support his family. Caught stealing lumber, he is sentenced to hang, but through the advice of his wife, gets his sentence commuted by agreeing to emigrate to New South Wales. He is assigned to her as a convict laborer and within a few years, wins his freedom. The novel dramatizes the settlers’ dreams and offers contemporary insight as it takes the reader into the lives of the settlers and the aborigines, who find their land being taken away from them.
