Sharing, Planning & Networking
Volunteer meetings were not held during the
summer months, but librarians and information specialists
met with Senior Connections project director. It was an opportunity
to meet others dedicated to Senior Connections’ mission
and discuss the progress, problems and meaningful contributions
of our program.
The
Coordinators discussed the President’s HealthierUS initiative
and ways to incorporate Physical Fitness, Nutrition, and Prevention
into our senior information efforts. Replicating the Senior
Connections Staying Healthy at 50+ seminar to the public was
encouraged.
Another
educational seminar Discount Prescription Drugs for Seniors
was presented to the public by our project director. Coordinators
discussed this seminar, the key points, and a variety of materials
to use in public education. Topics in this highly charged
issue include the legislators’ Medicare Drug Plans now
being debated, Canadian drug imports, our own NYS EPIC program,
generic drugs, and the high cost of prescription drugs.
Coordinators
had a chance to speak with other coordinators about Finding,
Training and Utilizing Senior Volunteers and about Relationships
with Library Personnel. Some found their volunteers to be
helpful and productive, while others learned how this happens.
The peer-to-peer training was not enough for new volunteers
and a dialogue began for improvement. As a result of these
summer meetings, a format for training and resource building
was started.
We
thank the following Coordinators and their libraries for their
input:
Mary
Jo McKeon, Baldwin
Rachel Taub, Farmingdale
Jackie Klempner, Freeport
Jean Scanlon, Freeport
Lee Fertitta, Port Washington
Janet Spar, Levittown

Lee Gundel, Massapequa
Suzanne Molczan, Hillside
Cecilia Liu, Shelter Rock
