If Energy Bills Are Too High To Handle – HEAP Can Help!
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) provides cash to help pay heating bills for low-income individuals and families. For applicants aged 60 and over, it is administered by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs
Those eligible must: pay for heat directly or pay for heat in their rent payment; age 60 or older to receive a higher benefit; live in a HEAP-eligible residence; be US Citizen or Qualified Alien. Recipients of public assistance, food stamps or SSI are income-eligible for HEAP. All other applicants must meet the gross monthly income test based on household size. Benefits: cash payment or credit to energy supplier; depends on household composition, energy bills and "Income Tier" (see library Coordinator).
Eligible seniors can begin applying for a HEAP grant November 4th. HEAP provides grants on a first come, first serve basis until the funds provided for each heating season run out. Applications and information will be delivered to Coordinators in Senior Connections blue information envelopes or by calling (516) 571-8770. Emergency help is available by contacting EAC in Mineola, (516) 565-4327.
