Old
Bethpage Village Restoration, an open-air museum of Long Island's history,
is alive with the sights and sounds of yesterday - a permanent example
of a way of life that once was. Throughout the year Old Bethpage recreates
the atmosphere of a pre-Civil War Long Island Village, illustrating agricultural,
domestic and commercial activities through the actual practice of crafts
and skills.
On
some 200 acres of rolling hills, more than 55 historic buildings -- all
original structures saved from destruction and moved to the site -- provide
the setting for costumed interpreters to portray farmers, teachers, storekeepers,
blacksmiths, civic leaders, and others who made up a community of the mid-1800s.
Each
month is highlighted by a special activity at Old Bethpage, such as Weekend
Magic Lantern shows in January, corn and potato planting and sheep shearing
in May, and Fall Harvest in October. October is also the month of the Long
Island Fair -- one of the state's oldest agricultural expositions.
