SUMMER 2009 TEEN PROGRAMS

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD. Mondays June 1, and August 31. 7 PM. In TeenSpace. No registration required. Free. Refreshments.

STORYTIME LOUNGE. Come to TeenSpace on Monday, June 22 from 7:00-8:00 PM to relax and hear some great teen literature. No registration required. Refreshments.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS:

Registration begins May 18, 2009 for SSD residents; May 25 for non-residents. Free. Refreshments.

  • PAJAMA BOOK BUDDIES - Wear your pj’s! Monday, June 8. 7 – 7:45 PM.
  • SUMMER CRAFT WITH KIDS – Help a child create a craft to take home. July 20. 7 – 7:45 PM.
  • CANDY BINGO NIGHT - Play Bingo with kids for candy. Monday, August 3. 7 – 7:45 PM.

 

TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM

All students entering 6 th grade or higher (as of September 2009) are invited to join the Teen Summer Reading Program “Express Yourself @ Your Library”. Exciting weekly raffles. Sign up at TeenSpace or online at www.syossetlibrary.org beginning Monday, June 22. The Summer Reading Program begins on Monday, June 29 and ends on Friday, August 7 with a Wrap Up Party. Refreshments at all programs.

Registration for all Teen Summer programs begins on Monday, June 8, 2009 for SSD residents; June 15 for non-residents.

TEEN DIGITAL BOOK PROJECT. We need your creativity for our first digital book. We will be uploading your creative submissions to create a self-published keepsake. Express yourself through writing, photography, artwork –we want it all! Informational meeting on Tuesday, June 30 from 3 - 4:00 PM in TeenSpace or inquire at the TeenSpace desk.

LAZY LETTERS with Joanne Insinga. Monday, June 29. 7 – 8:30 PM. Make easy “lazy letters” to design and address envelopes and note cards. Materials fee: $3.50. Registration in person is required.

TWILIGHT MOVIE AND BOOK DEBATE. Monday, July 6. 6:00-8:30 PM. Join us in the theater for the movie and stay to debate which was better: the book or the movie. Free.

THE ART OF MUSIC with Ivy Bell-Bazer and Joe DePiola. Monday July 13. 7:00-8:00 PM. Teens are invited (but not required) to bring in their musical instruments (guitar, drums, etc.) and listen to other talented teens. Teens will then create an art project based on the instruments. Materials fee: $2.00. Registration in person is required.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP. Join Thomas Fahy, author of The Unspoken for his workshop “Aliens, Ghosts, and Ten Gallon Hats: Reading and Writing in Your Favorite Genres.” Monday, July 27. 7 – 8:00 PM. Free.

SUMMER READING WRAP UP PIZZA PARTY. Guitar Hero. Friday, August 7. Rock out with Guitar Hero! Pizza at 6:30 PM. Guitar Hero at 7 PM. Summer Reading grand prize raffle drawings at 8:30 PM. (Ongoing registration limited to Summer Reading members who have read at least one book.) Free.

TEEN CRAFT NIGHT. Monday, August 10. 7 - 8:00 PM. Craft with materials you have around the house. Registration begins Monday, July 6 for SSD residents; July 13 for non-residents.  Free. Refreshments.

Wii SPORTS FOR SENIORS AND TEENS.  Tuesday, August 18.  2 – 3:30 PM.  “Wii” need volunteers to teach seniors how to play Wii Sports.  Virtual bowling, tennis, golf and boxing.  Registration begins Tuesday, July 14 for SSD residents; July 21 for non-residents.  Free.

COLLEGE PREPARATION SERIES

Get ready for college with the following key programs:

PRACTICE SAT EXAM. Presented by Kaplan Test Prep. Exam on Saturday, July 25. 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM. Parents and students evaluate test results on Thursday, July 30. 7 - 8:30 PM. Free. Registration begins Monday, July 6 for SSD residents; July 13 for non-residents.

Registration for the following free programs begins on Monday, August 17 for SSD residents; August 24 for non-residents. COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING with Martha Maloof. Sunday, September 13. 2 – 4:00 PM.

SAT TEST TAKING TIPS with Joan U. Levy. Monday, September 21. 7 – 8:30 PM.

COLLEGE FINANCING with Barry Fox. Monday, November 2. 7 - 8:30 PM.
