Read & Run Summer Marathon
Knock-out Nonfiction | Take a Poem Home | Fabulous Fiction
Beginning to Read (Controlled Vocabulary) | A Little More Challenging
This summer, we would like to challenge the students of Carbonaro to make a commitment to reading and physical fitness. Research supports that these two activities need to become habits at an early age in order to achieve lifelong success.
To support this goal and in keeping with New York State standards, the RWC Read and Run Summer Marathon has been created by the physical education, reading and library departments to ensure that our students stay active and keep reading!
This activity is not a competition between youngsters. Instead, it is an opportunity to have children improve their reading ability and increase their fitness levels at their own pace.
Students must fill out the attached calendar by logging their reading and physical activity for the summer months. Using the 26 mile marathon as our inspiration, each child's goal is to complete 26 half hour reading blocks and 26 half hour activity blocks during the length of the summer. Each 30 minute block equals one reading mile or one activity mile. In order to be successful, children must pace themselves throughout the summer vacation!
Along with the calender, this packet includes a suggested list of activities for physical fitness - they don't have to run all the time. There is also a suggested reading list of many types of books, from nonfiction to poetry to chapter books.
Students must hand in their reading calendar by Friday, September 9th to their classroom teacher to be eligible for the PTA Ice Cream party, a certificate of achievement and a chance at the "Read and Run" raffle. All calendars must be signed by a parent or guardian to be eligible for the raffle!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Laurie Arnone, Reading Teacher
Faye Egre, Physical Education Teacher
