Blue ArrowAssignment

To: Parents/Guardians of students in or enterting South Junior-Senior High School

From: English Department Teachers

Date: June 20205

Re: Summer Reading

Students at Valley Stream South are encouraged to continue developing their reading skills throughout the summer months. To help students focus their efforts, the English Department requires that each student read at least one book during the summer vacation. Upon their return to school in September, students will be tested on the book or books they have read.

Students are strongly encouraged to take notes as they read. Their notes should include details about character developmen, conflict, setting and theme. These notes will be useful to the students during an in-class assessment that will be conducted in early September. Please note that only handwritten notes generated by the students will be permitted in class. Notes can be taken on "post-it" paper, index cards, or loose leaf.

Parental support and cooperation are essential in developing the skills that are required by the New York State Board of Regnets in the English Language Arts areas. In an age when any type of information may be readily acquired from the Internet, we ask that parents and guardians monitor their children in the completion of this summer reading assignment. Encourage your child to read independently and to actively take notes when reading.

This year's list of summer reading titles appears on the reverse side of this memorandum. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Valley Stream South English Department at 791-0374.
