Entering Grade 1

Reading aloud to your child, as well as reading with your child (shared reading), should be enjoyable as well as educational! Here are some tips to assist you in reading with your child:

* Try to choose books that are above your child's reading level, but at his or her interest level
* Discuss the title, the cover, and the pictures before you read to get a feel for the book
* Be dramatic, show delight in the story line and the language
* Pause and ask brief questions about the story
* Allow time for your child to make connections and relate the story to his or her experiences
* Ask your child to re-tell the story back to you using the pictures and the words
* Re-read the book another day, children love to hear stories they like again and again
* Don't be surprised if your child reads along with you or fills in the words when you pause - encourage it!
* Be consistent about reading, do it daily and if possible at the same time each day (before bed is a great time)
