2001 SUMMER READING CLUBS - The library's CHILDREN'S AND YOUNG ADULT SUMMER READING CLUBS were a great success! This year's theme was "2001 : A Reading Odyssey." Children and teens read books, enjoyed storyhours, created great craft projects, and were treated to some great programs. Magicians Mark and Kym entertained the children in the End of the Summer Reading Club Celebration on Thursday, August 16, 2001. Check out the Photo Gallery from Mark and Kym's Performance.
EZRA JACK KEATS CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL PET WEEK - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library celebrated National Pet Week from May 7, 2001 through May 12, 2001, with a variety of presentations, craft programs, and a storytime session. Reptiles On the Move visited the library during the celebration. These activities were all funded by an Ezra Jack Keats Foundation Mini-Grant awarded to the library for 2001. WINNERS OF THE 4TH ANNUAL TEEN POETRY CONTEST ANNOUNCED - Six students were honored on Friday, May 11, 2001 for their winning poems in the library's 4th Annual Teen Poetry Contest. Over 65 poems were submitted in this year's contest. Each poet received an award certificate and ribbon, plus a citation from New York Assemblyman Robert Barra. First place winners also received books of poetry. First Place Winners : Nicole Dohrmann, Christine Malecki.
Second Place Winners : Alyssa Cicchetti, Sofia Iqbal.
Third Place Winners : Crystan Brodsky, Tosin Ojugbele. 3RD ANNUAL YA CHALK ART CONTEST HELD - The library held its YA Chalk Art Contest and Children's Chalk Art Show in front of the library and the Village Hall on Saturday, March 31, 2001. The winners of the YA Chalk Art Contest were : Ashley Costello - For Use of Color ; Sara Palazzolo - For Quality of Artwork ; and Ben Palazzolo - For Originality. Prizes & ribbons were awarded to all the teen artists by Mayor Edward Cahill, Trustee Guido Cirenza, Trustee Joann Antun; NYS Assemblyman Robert Barra; and Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin. Boxes of chalk and participation ribbons were given to all the children partipating in the art show. All the children were treated to a magic show by Throckmorton the Wizard (aka Terry Parrett). NEW ADULT LIBRARIAN TRAINEE HAS JOINED THE STAFF - Lena Sau joined the staff of the library as the new Adult Librarian Trainee in January 2001. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Library Science program at Queens College.
PUBLIC ACCESS INTERNET SERVICE is now available in the Adult Room to adult library cardholders. Registration is required prior to first internet use ; written parental consent is needed for adult library cardholders under the age of 18. Ask at the Adult Reference Desk for the library's Public Access Internet Policy and to reserve computer time.
