Blue ArrowPARENTS AS INTERNET PARTNERS - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library has developed a new webpage, "Parents As Internet Partners," to aid parents work with the children to utilize the Internet and World Wide Web more efficiently and effectively. The development of this webpage was funded by a 2001/2002 Parent & Child Library Services Grant from the New York State Library to the library.  Stop by the Children's Room and ask for a copy of the instructional booklet that explains the webpage while the supply lasts.

Blue ArrowCELEBRATING THE YEAR WITH MUSIC - The library will present a series of musical programs entitled "Celebrating the Year with Music ... Once Again," during 2002. The programs for children and families are partially funded by a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts Decentralization Program, administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. The first program, held on March 14, 2002, featured Patricia Shih in "Celebrating Women's History Month." View the Photo Gallery for this program. The second program in this series, "Celebrating a New School Year," was held on August 29, 2002, featured Joe Guida, The Singing School Bus Driver. View the Photo Gallary for photos from this program. The final program in this series will be "Songs of the Season," with Robin Greenstein and Cecelia Kirtland, on Thursday, December 5, 2002.

Blue ArrowWINNERS OF THE 5TH ANNUAL TEEN POETRY CONTEST ANNOUNCED - Four students were honored on Friday, April 26, 2002, for their winning poems in the library's 5th Annual Teen Poetry Contest. Each poet received an award certificate acknowledging their achievement. First place winners also received rhyming dictionaries to help with future poetry writing. Blue Arrow4th ANNUAL YA SIDEWALK CHALK ART CONTEST - The library held its 4th Annual YA Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest and Children's Sidewalk Chalk Art Show on Saturday, April 20, 2002. As always, this was a very popular program, with teens, children, and parents. The winners of the YA Chalk Art Contest were :  Ashley Costello - For Originality; Lauren Koenig- For Quality of Artwork ; and Shawn Amin - For Use of Color.  Prizes & ribbons were awarded to all the teen artists by Mayor Edward Cahill, Trustee Guido Cirenza, Trustee Joann Antun, Trustee Joseph Zabatta; Village Justice Robert Bogle; NYS Assemblyman Robert Barra; and Town of Hempstead Clerk Kathleen P. Murray; Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Donald X. Clavin, Jr.; and Town of Hempstead Council Member James Darcy. Boxes of chalk and participation ribbons were given to all the children partipating in the art show. View the Sidewalk Chalk Photo Gallery to see some of the artwork created by the children.

Blue ArrowREPTILES ON THE MOVE - Following the chalk festivities, all the teens, children, and parents were treated to a special program by Reptiles On The Move. Marie Thompson fascinated the audience with her lizards, turtles, and snakes. View the Reptiles On The Move Photo Gallery.

Blue Arrow5TH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LEGO EXHIBIT -The library held its 5th Annual Children's Lego Exhibit from January-February 2002. Children of all ages exhibited their Lego creations for all to see. They varied from an American flag to spaceships to beach houses. All the children received a Certificate of Achievement for their participation.
