Blue ArrowNEW CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN TRAINEE HAS JOINED THE STAFF - Suzanne Dlogolonski has joined the staff of the library as the new Children's Librarian Trainee . She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Library Science program at the Palmer School at C.W. Post, L.I.U. Ms. D has introduced new programs for children such as Nursery Times and Saturday Story Times.

Blue ArrowCHILDREN'S ROOM WALL MURAL - The wall above the newly-constructed Storytime Area in the Children's Room is now adorned with a colorful and imaginative mural of children's book characters. The mural was painted by local artist Stephanie Darcy during the summer. Ms. Darcy has included children's book characters such as Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughter, etc. Children who view the mural enjoy identifying the book characters throughout the mural. Blue ArrowANNUAL CHILDREN'S HALLOWEEN PARADE - Almost forty children participated in the library's annual children's Halloween parade on Monday, October 31, 2005. After hearing a Halloween story read by Children's Librarian Ms. Dlugolonski, the children showed off their costumes to library patrons and staff as they paraded throughout the library. Blue ArrowLIBRARY RECEIVES LITERACY GRANT FROM WAL-MART: The Henry Waldinger received a generous literacy grant from Wal-Mart to support its children's and literacy programs during the coming year. Assistant Library Director Mamie Eng received a check for $1,750 from Valley Stream Wal-Mart Store Manager Amy Skaggs on September 6, 2005.

Blue ArrowEZRA JACK KEATS WEEK - Jennie's Hat, by Ezra Jack Keats, was the inspiration for the library's weeklong celebration of children's literature. On Monday, August 22, 2005, a craft for younger children in Grades 1-3 was offered. Older children in Grades 4-6 attended a craft program on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, while children ages 3-6 attended a special Alphabet Soup program featuring the letter "H" for hats on Wednesday, August 24, 2005. The week culiminated with our Hats on Parade event for children ages 3-7 on Friday, August 26, 2005. Prizes were awarded to all children. In addition, everyone received copies of Jennie's Hat. All the programs were funded by an Ezra Jack Keats Minigrant awarded to the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.

Blue ArrowREPTILES ON THE MOVE VISITS LIBRARY - On Monday, July 18, 2005, Reptiles On the Move presented a special program for over 35 children in the Children's Room at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library. Marie Thompson from Reptiles On the Move entertained, fascinated, and educated the children with her snakes, iguanas, turtles, and other reptiles

.Blue ArrowCHILDREN'S SUMMER READING CLUB - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library sponsored two successful Children's Summer Reading Clubs this year. Over 230 children finished and received reading achievement certificates. Twenty programs were held and over 400 children participated in the progams. On August 17, 2005, Patricia Shih entered over 250 children and adults at the End-of-the-Summer Celebration on the Village Green Bandshell. Children were encouraged to bring non-perishable foods to contribute to the Holy Name of Mary Outreach Food Kitchen and become a "Caring Kid." Over 135 items were contributed by the children.

Blue ArrowLIBRARY RENOVATION - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library is pleased to announce that renovation of the Adult Room, Children's Room, and Work Area has basically been completed. Patrons will now find new circulation desks, a new reference desk, a new storytime area, new reading areas, etc. throughout the library. Renovation began on January 3, 2005 and was completed in June 2005 (with a few exceptions). The library remained open throughout the entire renovation period, although access to certain areas and collections were limited. This is the first major renovation of the library in over 40 years.

Blue ArrowMORE MUSIC & STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held a series of musical programs this spring which were partially funded by a Nassau Grant for the Arts administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. Chris Merwin and Kishiko Hasegawa of Kikyo Genso performed traditional Japanese music and dance on Thursday, April 21, 2005. The second program held on Thursday, May 12, 2005, featured Chris Merwin of One World performing music on stringed instruments from around the world. The final program was Afrikan Storytelling & Music by World Harvest Storytellers on Thursday, June 9, 2005.

Blue ArrowVALLEY STREAM BOOK CLUB - Beginning in June 2005, the Valley Stream Book Club will meet at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library on a monthly basis at 7:00 p.m. Registration is required prior to the book club meeting so that a copy of the book selected for the month can be reserved for each participant. For further information, contact Librarian Trainee Anna Shifton or Assistant Director Mamie Eng, (516) 825-6422.

Blue ArrowANNUAL CHILDREN'S SIDEWALK CHALK SHOW - The library held its Annual Children's Sidewalk Chalk Show on Saturday, April 16, 2005. Children of all ages drew chalk pictures on the sidewalk outside the library. All the children received a Certificate of Achievement and Honorable Mention Ribbons for their participation. Mayor Edward Cahill, Village Trustees Joanne Antun, Guido Cirenza, and Ed Fare, and Town Councilman James Darcy were present to honor the young artists.

Blue Arrow8TH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LEGO EXHIBIT -The library held its 8th Annual Children's Lego Exhibit in January 2005. Children of all ages exhibited their Lego creations for all to see. All the children received a Certificate of Achievement for their participation.
