2009 Library News

Blue ArrowMORE MUSICAL DIVERSITY IN AMERICA - During the spring of 2009, the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held "More Musical Diversity in America," a series of musical programs which were partially funded by a Nassau Grant for the Arts administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. The first program was held on Thursday, February 26, 2009, with Cowboy Ernie Sites presenting "Singing the Stories of the West," a family program of cowboy stories, songs, and music. The Underdogs of the Orchestra performed "Duets of American Music" on Thursday, March 19, 2009. The third program was held on Thursday, April 2, 2009. Paul Helou presented "Bluegrass/Folk Music." The final program was held on Thursday, June 4, 2009, with Robin Greenstein presenting "Patriotic and American Folksongs."

Blue ArrowGOOWIN'S BALLOOWINS - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library presented a wonderful performance of Goowin's Balloowins, by Allyn Goeyn, on Thursday, February 19, 2009. Using humor, music, and balloons, children and parents enjoyed unique presentations of popular stories such as "Snow White" and "The Three Little Pigs." This program was funded by a special New York State Legislative grant awarded to the library by State Senator Dean Skelos.

Blue ArrowFAMILY MUSEUM PASS PROGRAM - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library has initiated a Family Museum Pass Program where families in good standing are able to borrow a museum pass that allows them to visit the institution for free. This pilot program was made possible by a generous donation to the library by the Valley Stream Cultural Affairs Committee. Passes are available for the American Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum of Manhattan, Clark Botanic Garden, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garvies Point Preserve, Long Island Children's Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Nassau County Museum of Art, New York Botanical Garden, Old Westbury Gardens, and Paley Center for Media. Ask at the Adult Reference Desk for further information and the availability of passes.

Blue ArrowWE THE PEOPLE BOOKSHELF GRANT - CREATED EQUAL - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library was awarded a 2008/2009 "We the People Bookshelf Grant - Created Equal " from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Activities for this grant included , an exhibit and a bookmark contest for elementary and secondary school students

.Blue ArrowJUNGLE BOB LIVE! - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library presented a special program on Thursday, January 22, 2009, with Jungle Bob Live! Jungle Bob showed children and parents a variety of exotic pets, including a red-haired tarantula, an alligator, and an albino python. This program was funded by a special New York State Legislative grant awarded to the library by State Senator Dean Skelos.

Blue Arrow12th ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LEGO EXHIBIT -The library held its 12th Annual Children's LEGO Exhibit in January 2009. Children of all ages are exhibiting their Lego creations for all to see. All the children receive a Certificate of Achievement for their participation.
