HISTORY


The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library subscribes to several online resources that can help with general research or homework assignments. In some cases, you will be asked to enter your library card barcode number which is located on the reverse side of your library card. In other cases, you will be asked to enter a password, which may be obtained at the Adult Reference Desk upon presentation of your library card.

Biography Resource Center + The Complete Marquis Who's Who(r) : This database combines award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search. With the Complete Marquis Who's Who(R) , find quick reference information on an additional 900,000 people.

CQ Researcher Online is an online resource for balanced and in-depth analysis of contemporary issues.

Gale Virtual Reference Library: Datebase features a wide variety of eBook reference titles from Thomson Gale, including:

  • American Decades
  • American Decades Primary Sources
  • Dictionary of American History
  • World War I Reference Library
  • World War II Reference Library

Gale Virtual Reference Library - NOVEL is a database of encyclopedias, alamanacs, and specialized reference sources, including the following history reference titles:

  • American Revolution Reference Library
  • American Civil War Reference Library
  • Major Acts of Congress, 1st ed.
  • History Behind the Headlines

It is being offered to patrons through NOVEL, the New York State Statewide Database Project.

Long Island Forum Index Online is an online version of the Long Island Forum Index. The Long Island Forum was published by the Friends of Long Island's Heritage from 1938 until it ceased publication in 2004. The online index was a collaborative effort with the Patchogue-Medford Library.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center : Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources to provide a complete one-stop source for information on social issues. Access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.

The American Civil War Homepage is a regularly updated page from the University of Tennessee's School of Information Sciences which serves as a portal for Civil War study.
American Memory is a web-based home for the Library of Congress's outstanding collections of Americana. Maps, journals, photographs, sound and video are digitized and presented online along with excellent introductions and background information.
American Women's History: A Research Guide : Pathfinder to various types of resources on women's history.
Archival Research Catalog (ARC) is the online catalog of National Archives and Records Administration's nationwide holdings in the Washington, DC area, Regional Archives and Presidential Libraries.
Civil War Women: Primary Sources on the Internet is a site from Duke University's Special Collections Library. It includes letters, photographs, and full-text diaries of Civil War-era women.
50States.com : Information on the 50 states including government, geography, and state facts.
An Introduction to the American Slave Narratives was created from interviews conducted under the Federal Writers Project. The site includes selected interviews, accompanied by classroom activities and lesson plans.

National Atlas of the United States of America ® is the single best Federal source for national maps and geographic information on the Web.
New York History Net is for historians and students of New York history and culture, providing links to historical societies, historical resources, archives, and online exhibits.
New York Public Library Picture Collection : Website includes images from the NYPL Picture Collection, some dating back to the 1700s, clipped from books, newspapers, magazines, as well as digitized copies of original photographs, prints and postcards.
Presidents of the United States gives background information, election results, cabinet members, presidency highlights, and some odd facts on each of the presidents. Links to biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, and other presidential sites.
The Presidents of the United States of America lists internal links to each president of the United States, including photographs and links to speeches.
Smithsonian : National Museum of American History website chronicles our national history with more than 20 virtual exhibits for in-depth examination.

Biography.com provides quick access to biographical data on the web. This website is from A&E Biography.

EyeWitness to History : History from the Ancient World to the present through the eyes of those who lived it, presented by Ibis Communications, Inc. a digital publisher of educational programming.

Famous Inventors A to Z provides links to any famous historical inventor. Includes biographies, A to Z directory, timelines, sections on Australian, Chinese, Hispanic, Native American and more nationalities.
Geo-Globe: Interactive Geography : Interactive games that cover map skills, animals around the world, plant life, landmarks, oceans, and the geography of the earth.

Gifts of Speech : Women's Speeches from Around the World : Website, created by Sweet Briar college, preserves and provides access to speeches by influential contemporary, women from around the world.

The History Channel.com includes thorough documentaries and articles found on The History Channel.

The History Place offers historical photos and speeches, day-to-day events, movie reviews, biographies, links, and more.
Internet Women's History Sourcebook : Website collects online documents and secondary materals related to women.
Multicultural Calendar : Website includes d escriptions of local holidays and customs written by kids, compiled by Kidlink.

National Geographic Xpeditions : Virtual exhibits on everything from mapmaking to the Paris Metro.

NationalGeographic.com is the premier website for exploring the world visually.

RootsWeb.com is the largest and oldest free genealogy site, supported by Ancestry.com. It provides access to various databases with birth certificates, marriage records, etc., and gives access to mailing lists and message boards that let you network with others looking for the same relatives.

This Day in History tells you what happened on that day in years past - battles, events, deaths, etc.
