MUSEUM PASSES

The purpose of our Museum Pass Program is to help make museum experiences accessible to our West Hempstead patrons.  This year, we have reinstituted the Museum Lottery system for our free tickets to the NY Hall of Science in addition to the Family Pass program for the museums that have provided the Library with Passes that may be borrowed and returned, similar to a book.
Only West Hempstead Library cardholders (age 18 or older) who are in good standing may request these passes.  Residents of the district who do not presently own a library card need to apply for one in order to participate in this valuable program that offers free entry to a variety of metropolitan cultural institutions.
We are now lending the passes for three (3) days over the weekend and for two (2) days on weekdays. Come to the Reference Desk to learn more about our Museum Pass program.

I Feel Bad About My Neck

"Quaint and out-of-touch" or "a timeless classic"?  When D. H. Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley's Lover, over 70 years ago, no publisher in Britain or America would print it in its entirety.

Let's see what controversy stirs among our present day readers.  How much have we really changed?

We'll read and discuss this collection of essays in I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron, the author well-known for her screenplays When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Silkwood, and her best sellers Heartburn and Crazy Salad.

Join us for our very first MYSTERY Book Discussion!

Still Life is the first book in Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. In 2006, it was the winner of the New Blood Dagger in Britain and the Arthur Ellis Award in Canada for best first crime novel and the runner-up for the CWA Debut Dagger Award in 2004.

The 2010 Long Island Reads Book Selection has been announced!
The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey

Long Island Reads is an Island-wide reading initiative, sponsored by the Nassau Library System and the Public Libraries of Suffolk County.

Each spring, during National Library Week, book lovers in Nassau and Suffolk come together to read the same book, participate in discussions of the selection and enjoy book related events in their public libraries.

Our book discussion will take place on March 17, 2010 at 10:30 am
Check the Book Chat Archive to see what we have read recently or have scheduled so far for next year. Let us know what suggestions you may have for upcoming discussions. We welcome your recommendations and reviews!

New Products and Services!

The West Hempstead Public Library is proud to be part of the Nassau Digital Doorway (NDD) service which provides online access to best-selling and classic audiobooks for your listening pleasure and to our newest offering - eBooks. EPUB eBooks are digital versions of print books that have been optimized for on-screen reading on your computer or laptop.

Download and listen to content from your home computer, transfer the digital media to your compatible MP3 player, or burn them onto a CD (when allowed by the publisher). Patrons may check out up to five titles at a time, and at the end of the seven day lending period, the downloaded media will expire from the PC and automatically be returned to the digital collection, so you never have to worry about late fees.
