Director's Message

Greetings!

Despite the summer’s dreary weather, the library was a very busy place. Many children, teens and adults participated in our very successful summer reading clubs. The children’s room was especially busy. Hundreds of children came in each week to report on the books they read or to participate in one of the many programs that were offered. Close to fifty teens attended the Young Adult Summer Reading Club pizza party.

Our circulation for the month of July 2009 reached almost 22,000 items, which is a record high for the library. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me feel to see the library being so well utilized.

This fall, we will be picking up the pace again with events in all departments and for all ages, including bus trips and Sunday entertainment. Some programs will return since they have become favorites and have a following of dedicated students. You will see storytimes and S.A.T. prep classes, along with many exciting NEW activities for all ages. Plan on attending the different workshops we offer. If you have little ones, sign them up for one of our children’s programs.

Many of you have asked about the structure being built on the front lawn of the library. The fountain has been donated to the library in memory of Thomas Haas, a graduate of Cooper Union, who designed the fountain some twenty years ago. Before he passed away after a long battle with cancer in 2007, he approached the Library Board of Trustees about building the fountain at the new library. Mr. Haas’ proposal was accepted. After his passing, his family raised close to $70,000 so his dream would become a reality. The Haas Family hopes to dedicate the fountain in the Fall. Watch for further details.

Thank you as always for your continued use and support of the library. Come in and check out a book, DVD, or CD, attend a program, use a computer, study or just sit and relax by reading a book, magazine or newspaper. The library has a great staff who are here to assist you with whatever you may need.
