Over the past few months, many people have asked me, “Why does the Friends of the WHPL need to raise money? After all,” they continue, “we’ve already approved two bond issues to build this library, what more could they need?”
Yet the reality is that any project of this magnitude will most likely incur additional, unforeseen expenses. Mounting a major fundraising drive at this time will allow us to raise any additional funds that may be necessary to fully equip and utilize this new community resource, without going back to the individual taxpayer.
The opportunity also exists to include wonderful additions to the project…would we like to see the latest, digital sound equipment installed right away, so that we can host even better community concerts/theatrical events? How about nicer furnishings for the lower lobby so that the space welcomes those who wait for a concert, or who would like to enjoy an art exhibit?
As an example of how we have helped in the past, it was the Friends who began the VCR, then DVD collection, and the books in large print, for our patrons. Will we need to be there to enhance current collections or will there be newer technologies that will need to be explored (Blue Ray? Ebooks?)
When funding is procured through a campaign such as this, everyone benefits. The residents will enjoy the additional resources and accommodations while the donor knows that they have contributed to creating an important and lasting addition to our community. Our Enhancement Campaign provides naming opportunities for everything from seating/study carrels to entire sections of the new building.
Joining us for fundraising events
will not only help us procure funds, but will allow us to enjoy the company of fellow-minded community supporters! Even something as simple as joining the Friends (only $5!) or buying a brick for the walkway makes a difference. Please look in this bulletin for the various ways you can get involved.
This community has overwhelmingly demonstrated its support for this important and worthwhile project. Now we urge you to take advantage of some of the unique opportunities that are currently available to make an additional commitment to our library, as we face a very exciting future, together.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Dunne, President
Friends of the West Hempstead Public Library
